Overview: The EcoTech Initiative is an umbrella organization that I have created dedicated to environmental sustainability through the means of computer science and math. Put simply, the project is about making an impact in the environment through STEM. As of September 2024, I am opening up this organization to include more people. This will include space for leadership positions and a continuation of the project. The organization consists of 3 main parts:

  1. Projects - This is the heart of the organization. Projects aim to create some sort of impact either on a community scale or on a larger scale for the environment. Some projects include giving a seminar on using data science techniques on News Articles to predict general sentiment surrounding the environment. Other projects include an extremely detailed interactive map that showcases useful statistics about the environment to people who use it. This map will easily show trends and patterns across a global scale. A full list of projects and descriptions is detailed below.
  2. Blog Articles - The Blog Articles are an important supplementary part of the organization. These will all be showcased on the central website, and will detail different environmental events related to computer science. For example, an article may be about the environmental effects of electric cars - how they are beneficial, how charging methods may hurt the environment etc.. Other articles may pertain to the use of wind turbines in 3rd world countries; the articles will highlight some aspect of the environment and how it relates to STEM. Each article will be about 200-500 words long, with sources and images as necessary.
  3. Research - The environmental research projects are the final major part of the organization, likely starting later in the year after more progress has been made in the other two fronts. The goal is to have 1-3 small research papers published that pertain to some novel aspect of the environment. Some of the articles or projects may also be adapted and modified into full research papers. Additionally, we will aim to get coverage at some sort of research conference, presenting our efforts to interested people.

Positions:

The EcoTech Initiative aims to gather a team of 10-15 people. Here are the following roles:

CEO - This is me, Gavin Warnakulasooriya, overseeing the organization and doing majority of the work on the projects aspect.

VP of Design - An individual that will assist in the management of the website. This role is extremely important as a major component of the organization is the website that showcases the efforts of the people.

VP of Projects - An individual that will manage 2-3 associates on a team all aiding with the creation and presentation of the projects

VP of Articles - An individual that will manage 3-4 associates on a team all writing articles. The VP will create most of the ideas and sources while the associates write the articles.

VP of Outreach - An individual that will lead 2-3 associates that will all help promote the organizations events to people. Since some projects are focused on hosting seminars, we will need people to actually show up. The VP of Outreach will ensure that this happens by marketing the project.

5-10 Associates - Individuals that work with one of the VP’s listed. Depending on performance, in upcoming years associates will be promoted, some even taking charge of the project as CEO.
